The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has confirmed the postponement of the upcoming match between Aberdeen and Celtic, a decision stemming from a new league policy designed to assist clubs in European competition.
The SPFL introduced a new ruling this season that allows any Premiership club participating in a UEFA play-off round to postpone their league fixture scheduled between the two legs of the European tie. The measure was implemented to give Scottish clubs the best possible chance of reaching the league phase of the Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League.
Aberdeen have exercised this option, requesting the postponement of their scheduled league game against Dundee United. Aberdeen are set to take part in the Europa League play-offs and sought to have a full week free between their crucial European fixtures.
While Celtic also had the opportunity to utilize this new rule, manager Brendan Rodgers has chosen against it. The club’s match against Livingston remains scheduled, as they look to maintain momentum and give players game time.
This new SPFL rule has been praised by many as a progressive step to help Scottish clubs on the European stage, offering a crucial rest period and minimizing fixture congestion. The postponed Aberdeen vs. Celtic match will be rescheduled for a later date in the season, to be announced by the SPFL once the UEFA league phase fixtures are confirmed. This new SPFL rule has been praised by many as a progressive step to help Scottish clubs on the European stage, offering a crucial rest period and minimizing fixture congestion.
