Gifted’ Chelsea player seems to agree with claim that Enzo Maresca has just played him in his strongest role
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made 11 changes to his side as they returned to Conference League action last night against Panathinaikos.
There were again no issues for the Blues, with them putting themselves top of the competition with a 4-1 win away from home.
Joao Felix’s two goals were a stark reminder of the quality he possesses, while Chelsea fans were delighted with what they saw from Mykhailo Mudryk.
The Ukraine international has been working hard under the new boss to try and show the talent everyone knows he has, and Mudryk went straight to Maresca to celebrate after his first goal of the season.
It was a first start in the competition for Enzo Fernandez, after he dropped to the bench at the weekend against Liverpool.
Enzo Fernandez seems to think Enzo Maresca has just found his best position at Chelsea
With Romeo Lavia impressing pundits with his display against the Reds, there was a lot of pressure on the World Cup winner to remind everyone why he had started every Premier League game he had been fit for so far.
A lot has been made about the position Fernandez picks up on the pitch under Maresca. He is usually operating in a left-sided role that does not always see him massively involved.
However, last night saw him do a lot of his work in a purely central position, and this seemed to bring the best out of him again
This is something Fernandez himself seems to believe too. He liked a comment on his own Instagram from a supporter backing up that claim.
Are Chelsea better without Fernandez?
There is no doubting the midfielder’s quality when he is at his best. Andy Townsend has previously described Fernandez as ‘gifted’.
- Chelsea’s win rate is significantly better when Fernandez is not in the side, however these stats do go back to a season where the Blues finished 12th in the league.
