Richarlison was handed his first start of the season in the Europa League tie against AZ Alkmaar, and before the game, Spurs legend Glenn Hoddle discussed how the Brazilian striker can be a valuable member of the squad.

Richarlison on the comeback trail

It has been a difficult few months for Richarlison, who has missed so much football due to injury. The forward underwent surgery at the end of last season, causing him to miss out on the pre-season tour, and then suffered another setback at the start of this term.

He was back in training last week, though, and made his comeback at the weekend in the game against West Ham, coming on as a substitute late on.

Now, Ange Postecoglou has put the 27-year-old into the starting lineup for the Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar, and all eyes will be on him to see if he can lead the line effectively and prove he still has worth in this Spurs squad.

Super sub role for Richarlison

Glenn Hoddle was quick to point out Richarlison’s flaws, but did go on to insist that the striker can be a very valuable player for Postecoglou this season, albeit as a back-up to Dominic Solanke.

When asked what Richarlison can add to Tottenham’s attack on TNT Sports (24/10/24 at 19:55), he said: “He is hot and cold for me, there is no consistency. Listen, it is not fair to judge him yet, he has been out with an injury for a long time but for me, I don’t think we’ll ever see him be really consistent and Solanke will always be ahead of him for the team.

“He has these little runs where he scores back-to-back goals. It looked that way last season but for me, I don’t think he has got that consistency about him and he really is up and down and you’re not quite sure.
