Leeds United suffer new blow in race to sign Southampton’s Cameron Archer on deadline day

Leeds United remain interested in trying to do a deal for Southampton striker Cameron Archer on deadline day, but The Whites have now suffered a new blow in their pursuit.

Leeds have already made a loan bid for Archer, but Southampton have rejected a bid for the 23-year-old. The Whites still want to sign Archer, with Southampton potentially signing a replacement in Victor Udoh.

However, Southampton may choose to keep Archer despite the signing of Udoh. Leeds perhaps, stand more of a chance of signing Archer if West Ham allow Danny Ings to go to his old club Southampton.

The Hammers are set to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton and that may allow The Saints to do a deal for Ings. But now, Leeds have suffered a new blow in pursuit of Archer – thanks to Adam Armstrong.

Middlesbrough and Sunderland eye late Adam Armstrong move

Pocket-sized striker Armstrong could be set for a return to the north east, having come through the Newcastle academy. The £15m signing starred for Southampton last season, having a hand in 37 goals.

A massive 24 goals and 13 assists, including the only goal in the play-off final at Wembley against Leeds. Graeme Bailey has told LeedsUnited.News that both Middlesbrough and Sunderland want Armstrong.

A loan deal is expected for the former Blackburn striker, and Bailey has told us that a deal for Armstrong is “more likely” than Archer leaving Southampton. It is unlikely Southampton allow two strikers to leave.

Leeds may have to look at other alternatives instead of Archer

Farke has constantly reiterated that any incoming signings must tick three boxes. They have a good character, they are affordable in terms of their quality and they are available for a transfer this month.

Whether Leeds have alternatives to Archer remains to be seen. Chelsea’s Marc Guiu was linked with Leeds over the weekend, before those reports were dismissed. Guiu has only played 12 times this season.

Archer looks unlikely at this stage and if Leeds are to make a signing, it will have to be a name that comes out of nowhere. It feels like Leeds might not sign anyone and really, do they desperately need anyone?
