Newcastle United striker ruled out vs Southampton – out for eight weeks
The 32-year-old missed the opening four months of the campaign after sustaining a back injury in the second week of pre-season. He returned at the end of November but after four substitute appearances suffered a setback.
Wilson is getting closer to a comeback but the visit to Southampton will come too soon for the striker.
“Yeah, it’s too early for Callum,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe. “Callum’s still on track for, I think, right at the beginning of February, if my memory serves me right. He’s making good progress.
“We’re trying to do the right things with him and make sure that he is robust enough and has all the work behind him and the load behind him before he starts training with the group.
“But he seems very positive and what a massive player that would be to welcome back.”
Wilson’s 2024 was blighted by several injuries, resulting in just two Premier League starts and 10 appearances in total.

When asked if Newcastle were doing anything differently to ease the nine-capped England international back to full fitness, Howe replied: “Well, if we’re not, then more for us. You know, we have to, we’re always trying different things, trying to learn from previous experiences. And it would be the same for Callum.
“Our main aim is to keep Callum fit and keep him on the pitch and keep him available to play because we know if he does, he’s a big player and he’ll always score goals. So I know that’s what Callum wants and he’s trying his absolute maximum.
!He’s doing everything he can professionally to keep himself on the pitch. And I’m sure everyone’s united again in that support for him. You know, we all want the same outcome to see him back to his best.
I”t would be great to see him back as and when that is.”
Howe’s side have been fortunate that Alexander Isak has stayed fit during Wilson’s latest time out. The Sweden international has only missed one game – the 3-0 FA Cup third round win over Bromley – and scored 11 goals in
11 gamesin that period.
