Newcastle’s Joe Willock makes awful admission about Fulham fans
Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock has disclosed that he was subjected to racist abuse online after his team’s 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Saturday, The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reports.
Willock came on as a substitute in the second half and missed a key opportunity to restore Newcastle’s lead before Fulham sealed their comeback victory late in the match.
Following the game, Willock took to social media to expose the racist messages he received.
“Willock took to social media to share screenshots of vile racist abuse he had received online,” Hope wrote.
Newcastle released a statement on Sunday morning condemning the abuse.
“Newcastle United strongly condemns the appalling racist abuse received by Joe Willock on Instagram on Saturday evening. There is no room for racism anywhere.
“Joe has been given the club’s full support and we will continue to do all we can to ensure the welfare of our players, staff and supporters.” — Newcastle United
Willock has made 26 appearances for Newcastle this season, primarily as a substitute, scoring one goal and notching one assist.
With Almiron out and not many substitutes of talent across the squad, Willock remains one of the higher-level options as a role player for Eddie Howe’s side as they prepare to face Joe’s former club Arsenal on Wednesday in the EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday.
