Premier League release statement after VAR rules out Brentford goal.

Brentford striker Yoane Wissa thought he had opened the scoring against Brighton on Friday night, only for his goal to be ruled out following a VAR review for offside.

The Premier League has explained why VAR ruled out Yoane Wissa’s goal for Brentford against Brighton.

Wissa thought he had given the Bees the lead inside 15 minutes on the south coast from Mads Roerslev’s pass on the counter-attack. But VAR stalled Brentford’s celebrations by drawing a line to show he was narrowly offside.

The Premier League match centre tweeted: “Wissa’s goal was initially awarded on-field. VAR checked and established that Wissa was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

Andy Townsend said on co-commentary for Prime Video: “It’s tight. Yoane Wissa actually slows down once he starts to recognise what is developing. It looks like he might have just strayed fractionally off.”

Brentford celebrated Wissa’s goal triumphantly, having ridden out some early pressure from the Seagulls. Brighton hit the post through Julio Enciso, saw Kaoru Mitoma’s effort saved and had Matt O’Riley’s attempt blocked.

The decision continued a busy few days for VAR, with the officials frequently called into question on Boxing Day following some contentious calls.

The main bone of contention came at St James’ Park, where Aston Villa were annoyed to see striker Jhon Duran dismissed for a foul on Fabian Schar. The match centre statement read: “The referee issued a red card to Durán for violent conduct. The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call.
