Kyogo Furuhashi’s exit from Celtic has divided opinion.

Yes, everyone agrees that he leaves a Celtic legend after providing so many great memories for the supporters and scoring goals that will never be forgotten.

But the word ‘why’ has constantly been used when talking about Kyogo’s transfer to Rennes and fans are trying to figure out the answers.

Why has Kyogo decided to join Rennes, who are hovering above the relegtion zone in France’s top-tier, when he is playing for Celtic in the Champions League?

Why has the 30-year-old decided to leave in January and why couldn’t he, as well as the club, wait until the summer?

Brendan Rodgers has stated Kyogo asked to leave ‘months ago’, so that has already been out in the open.

Added to that, there have been reports about Kyogo wanting to play for Japan at the 2026 World Cup and how he needs to be playing for one of Europe’s top five leagues in order to achieve that.

But, once again, why leave now? Well, could there be a bit of a clue following comments from Sky Sports reporter, Dharmesh Sheth?!

Kyogo Furuhashi needs a shoulder operation after leaving Celtic for Rennes

Perhaps Kyogo’s January exit could do with the suggestion that he will soon undergo an operation on his shoulder.

That’s what reporter Dharmesh Sheth reported on the Transfer Show on Sky Sports and how he needs to get it done at ‘some stage’ and it will keep him out for a ‘lengthy period of time’.

You expect that surgery to take place from now until the start of next season, so perhaps the player didn’t want to risk that move, hence why he wanted to get it done before going under the knife.

“Let’s talk about the one out, first of all, Rennes have confirmed the signing of striker, Kyogo from Celtic,” said Sheth.

“He has been brilliant for them. He joins them for £10 million. Celtic see this as good business because Kyogo wanted to go. He had talks with the Japanese head coach, who told him ‘you need to be playing for one of Europe’s top five leagues to be a regular for the Japan national team’.

“Add to that, the 30-year-old has entered the final 18 months of his contract. Furthermore, he needs a shoulder operation at some stage, which is going to keep him out for a lengthy period of time.”

How Celtic paid tribute to Kyogo

Looking back at it now, all those offside goals for Kyogo against Young Boys feel harder to take now because what an end to his Celtic career it would have been.

But he heads for the exit door on 85 goals, including eight against Rangers, and his last strike was a brace away at Ross County.

Kyogo is a Celtic icon and the club’s official YouTube account posted a video of his best moments.
