The Leeds United juggernaut is gathering pace. Friday’s 2-0 victory over Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United extended the Whites’ unbeaten Championship run to five matches.
Second half goals from skipper Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph ensured Leeds returned to winning ways and secured the local bragging rights. It was a deserved win in front of the TV cameras at Elland Road.Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder said: “There’s going to be teams that have their moments and have their good times and their not so good times, but I think anybody who finishes above Leeds… and I’m not sure anybody will do.“I’ve got no complaints in terms of the result. They’ve got outstanding players, the squad’s laden with top players and we have to brush ourselves down and go again. It’s been a good start, but we haven’t played anybody of this calibre.”Daily Telegraph – Ross Heppenstall
Pascal Struijk and Mateo Joseph finally broke Sheffield United’s stubborn resistance with second-half goals as Leeds United deservedly edged an emotional Yorkshire derby.Whites captain Struijk produced a well-executed finish in the 69th minute, tucking the ball home left-footed from Joe Rothwell’s corner before substitute Joseph struck a clinical late second to confirm a first defeat of the season for the visitors.Struijk’s goal was also the first the visitors had conceded in seven games and Wilder, a boyhood Blade who was taunted mercilessly by the home fans, admitted: “Take nothing away from Leeds – they are far and away the best team we’ve played and I’m not sure anyone will finish above them this season.
“We didn’t deserve anything from the game and Leeds were better in every department.”
More significant, perhaps, was the result in the wider promotion picture as both these sides look to reach the Premier League this season.“We didn’t deserve anything from the game and Leeds were better in every department.”
